PITLANESTATS

The Story

The 2021 season delivered the most dramatic championship battle in F1 history. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton arrived at the Abu Dhabi finale level on points after a season of extraordinary wheel-to-wheel combat, controversial collisions, and bitter team radio exchanges. Silverstone saw them collide at Copse, putting Verstappen in hospital. Monza saw them tangle again, both retiring. Saudi Arabia was pure chaos. And then Abu Dhabi: Hamilton dominated until a late safety car changed everything. A controversial decision to allow only the lapped cars between the two leaders to unlap themselves set up a final-lap shootout. Verstappen, on fresh soft tyres, passed Hamilton into Turn 5 to win his first championship. The fallout reshaped F1's race direction procedures permanently.
