About Monsanto Park Circuit
The Monsanto Park Circuit was a fast road course laid out through the wooded parkland of Monsanto, on the western edge of Lisbon, Portugal. It hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix as a round of the Formula 1 World Championship just once, in 1959, when the country alternated its Grand Prix between Lisbon and the Boavista street circuit in Porto.
Like much of European racing in the 1950s, the circuit used closed public roads winding through the park, lined by trees, kerbs and unforgiving obstacles rather than modern run-off. It was quick and demanding, typical of the dangerous, character-filled venues of the era, and represented Lisbon's brief moment on the world championship stage.
Memorable Moments
- 1959: Stirling Moss dominated the only world championship Portuguese Grand Prix held at Monsanto, winning from pole position in his Cooper-Climax with a commanding, lights-to-flag performance.
