About Losail International Circuit
Built in the desert north of Doha and long established as a premier MotoGP venue, the Losail International Circuit welcomed Formula 1 for the first time in 2021. After a one-off debut, Qatar secured a long-term place on the calendar and the Qatar Grand Prix returned as a permanent fixture from 2023, run as a floodlit night race to escape the Gulf heat.
Ahead of its full-time return, the circuit was upgraded with new permanent facilities and revised run-off to meet Formula 1 standards. The fast, flowing layout and demanding desert conditions have quickly given Qatar a reputation as one of the most physically punishing rounds of the modern season.
Memorable Moments
- 2021: Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix from pole during his title fight with Max Verstappen, while Fernando Alonso took a popular podium for Alpine.
- 2023: Max Verstappen sealed his third consecutive World Championship in the sprint, before tyre limits and extreme heat made the main race a brutal test of endurance.
- 2024: Max Verstappen won again for Red Bull in a strategy-laden, safety-car-affected race under the desert lights.
- 2025: Verstappen completed a hat-trick of Qatar wins, keeping his title hopes alive late in the season.
Track Character
Losail is a fast, flowing circuit built around a string of long, sweeping medium- and high-speed corners that load the tyres heavily and reward commitment and aerodynamic efficiency. Its rhythmic, almost continuous nature gives drivers little respite, and combined with high lap counts and warm, humid Gulf conditions it has become one of the most physically demanding races on the calendar. Overtaking is concentrated at the few heavier braking zones, while the relentless corner sequences place a premium on managing tyres and staying precise lap after lap under the floodlights.
