The 2025 Season
The 2025 season produced a thrilling three-way championship battle that went down to the very last race of a 24-round campaign, with McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri pitted against the relentless Max Verstappen. McLaren built clearly the strongest car of the year and dominated the constructors' standings, but the team's two drivers spent the season locked in a tense intra-team duel for the title, trading the championship lead and the spotlight as the pressure mounted across the longest calendar in F1 history.
While the McLaren pair fought one another, Verstappen mounted a remarkable charge in a Red Bull that was not always the fastest car, dragging himself into title contention through sheer consistency and racecraft. A late-season twist saw Verstappen win in Qatar to keep his hopes alive and set up a winner-takes-all finale in Abu Dhabi, where the three contenders arrived separated by a handful of points. It was the kind of multi-driver decider the sport had not seen in years.
In the Abu Dhabi finale Verstappen won the race from pole, but Norris produced the composed drive he needed, finishing on the podium behind Verstappen and Piastri to secure his maiden World Championship by just two points over the Dutchman. Norris ended the year on 423 points to Verstappen's 421 and Piastri's 410, an extraordinarily narrow margin that underlined how finely poised the fight had been, and his triumph delivered McLaren their first Drivers' Championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2008.
The season also marked a new era for the grid, with Lewis Hamilton beginning his long-anticipated career at Ferrari, finishing fifth in the standings as he and the team adapted to one another, while teenage rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed in his debut campaign at Mercedes alongside George Russell, who anchored fourth overall. McLaren's dominant constructors' title and the razor-thin drivers' battle defined a memorable year, but it served above all as the final chapter before the sport's sweeping 2026 regulation revolution.
