About Virgin

Virgin Racing was one of the trio of new teams that joined Formula 1 in 2010, backed by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group. The team made headlines for its bold engineering approach, designing its car entirely using computational fluid dynamics without recourse to a traditional wind tunnel.

That gamble proved difficult, and the team struggled at the back of the grid, at one point famously discovering its car's fuel tank had been designed too small to complete some races. Virgin ran at the rear throughout its brief existence without scoring a point.

The team was taken over by Russian interests and rebranded as Marussia for 2012, continuing the operation under a new name.

Key Achievements

  • One of three new teams to enter Formula 1 in 2010
  • Pioneered an all-CFD car design philosophy
  • Backed by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group
  • Built a new operation from scratch
  • Evolved into the Marussia team

Legacy & Identity

Virgin Racing is remembered for its ambitious, controversial attempt to design a Formula 1 car without a wind tunnel, an experiment that underlined how hard the sport's technical challenges are. A brave if troubled newcomer, it began the lineage that continued as Marussia and Manor.
