About Dick Rathmann

Dick Rathmann, an American driver born in 1924, made five World Championship starts between 1950 and 1960, all of them at the Indianapolis 500, which counted toward the Formula 1 World Championship throughout that period. He first qualified in 1950 in a Watson, returning to championship competition six years later.

His most productive year was 1956, when he scored two points in a Kurtis Kraft and was classified twenty-fourth in the standings — the only points of his championship career. Rathmann then drove Watson chassis in three consecutive appearances from 1958 to 1960.

The standout entry in his record is a pole position, a rare distinction among drivers whose championship careers were confined to Indianapolis, and one that places him among the few in this category to have led a World Championship field away from the front of the grid.
