The 1956 Season
Juan Manuel Fangio won his fourth world championship, this time driving for Ferrari after the works Mercedes team's withdrawal. The title fight came down to the final round in Italy, where Fangio's car failed but team-mate Peter Collins handed over his own car so the Argentine could clinch the crown.
Collins's extraordinary act of sportsmanship cost him any chance of the title himself. Stirling Moss, now with Maserati, again finished runner-up, continuing his long pursuit of the championship that always eluded him.
