Jan Magnussen

Jan Magnussen, born on 4 July 1973 in Roskilde, Denmark, was a hugely talented racing driver whose Formula 1 career never reflected the brilliance he had shown on his way to the top. A junior phenomenon, he had earlier dominated British Formula 3 in record-breaking fashion, drawing comparisons with the very best and marking him out as a future star.

Magnussen made his Formula 1 debut as a one-off substitute for McLaren at the 1995 Pacific Grand Prix, before securing a full-time seat with the new Stewart Grand Prix team for 1997. He raced for Stewart through 1997 and into 1998, his most notable result coming at the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished sixth to score the single championship point of his F1 career. Across 25 starts he scored that 1 point before his grand prix opportunity came to an end.

It was after Formula 1 that Magnussen truly flourished, becoming one of the most successful GT and sports car drivers in the world. Racing for Corvette, he won the GT class at the Le Mans 24 Hours multiple times and claimed numerous American Le Mans Series titles, building a legacy as a sports car great. His son Kevin Magnussen later followed him into Formula 1.

Magnussen possessed enormous natural talent and outright speed, qualities that had made him a junior sensation, but uncompetitive machinery and limited opportunities meant his Formula 1 record never matched his promise. His true legacy lies in sports car racing, where he became one of the most decorated GT drivers of his time, and in passing the racing torch to his son Kevin, who carried the Magnussen name back onto the grand prix grid.
