Juan Pablo Montoya

Juan Pablo Montoya, born on 20 September 1975 in Bogota, was a Colombian racing driver whose aggressive, fearless style made him one of the most exciting talents of the early 2000s. Before reaching Formula 1 he had already built a formidable reputation across the Atlantic, winning the CART championship in 1999 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2000, which marked him out as a star long before his grand prix debut.

Montoya entered F1 with Williams in 2001 and announced himself immediately, leading at the Brazilian Grand Prix and famously passing Michael Schumacher around the outside before retirement, then taking his maiden victory at Monza. He spent four seasons with Williams from 2001 to 2004, finishing third in the championship in both 2002 and 2003, the latter with 82 points and two wins. A move to McLaren followed for 2005, where he scored three victories and finished fourth overall, before a turbulent 2006 campaign ended his F1 career mid-season. Across 95 starts he took 7 wins, 30 podiums, 13 poles and 307 points.

After leaving Formula 1, Montoya reinvented himself once more, switching to NASCAR where he raced for several seasons and won at the road courses of Sonoma and Watkins Glen. He later returned to IndyCar, winning the Indianapolis 500 for a second time in 2015, and added victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, completing one of the most versatile careers in modern motorsport.

Montoya was renowned for his raw speed and a combative, never-back-down racecraft that produced some of the era's most memorable overtakes. He thrived in wheel-to-wheel combat and on outright qualifying pace, even if his temperament and consistency occasionally cost him. His legacy rests on remarkable versatility, having won at the highest level in F1, CART, IndyCar, NASCAR and endurance racing, a breadth few drivers of any generation have matched.
