Hakkinen vs Irvine
The Substitute's Charge
The Story
The 1999 season was shaped by Michael Schumacher's leg-breaking crash at Silverstone, which thrust Eddie Irvine into the role of Ferrari's unlikely title contender. Irvine, a journeyman known more for his outspoken personality than his results, suddenly found himself fighting for the World Championship against the reigning champion Mika Hakkinen. Ferrari threw everything behind Irvine, including bringing in a recovered Schumacher as his support act for the final races. Hakkinen, meanwhile, suffered his own wobbles, infamously crying behind a barrier at Monza after spinning out of the lead. The title was decided at the Malaysian Grand Prix, where Irvine won but Ferrari's cars were initially disqualified for an illegal bargeboards before being reinstated. Hakkinen sealed his second title at the finale in Suzuka.
