About BMW Sauber
BMW Sauber was formed when the German manufacturer BMW bought a majority stake in the Sauber team for 2006, turning the respected Swiss independent into a works operation. The partnership combined Sauber's engineering base in Hinwil with BMW's resources and ambition.
The team made rapid progress and reached its peak in 2008, when Robert Kubica won the Canadian Grand Prix, the team's only victory, and BMW Sauber briefly looked capable of challenging for the championship before the focus shifted. The squad regularly scored podiums and finished a strong third in the 2007 and 2008 constructors' standings.
BMW withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 2009 amid the economic downturn, selling the team back to Peter Sauber, who returned it to independent status.
