The 2007 Season
The 2007 season is remembered above all for the explosive arrival of a rookie sensation. Lewis Hamilton, in his debut year with McLaren alongside two-time champion Fernando Alonso, stunned the paddock by finishing on the podium in each of his first nine races, an unprecedented start to a Formula One career. With Michael Schumacher retired and a new competitive order emerging, Hamilton and Alonso quickly became locked in a fierce intra-team rivalry while Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa pushed hard from the other side of the grid.
Off-track drama threatened to overshadow the racing in the form of the 'Spygate' scandal, in which McLaren was found to be in possession of confidential Ferrari technical data. The fallout was severe: the FIA fined McLaren a record 100 million dollars and stripped the team of all its Constructors' Championship points for the season, handing Ferrari the constructors' title by default. Amid the controversy, the relationship between Hamilton and Alonso deteriorated badly, with flashpoints including the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying where the two openly feuded over team orders.
The championship itself produced one of the closest and most dramatic finishes in F1 history. Hamilton looked set to become the first rookie champion, leading the standings heading into the final two races, but a gearbox problem in China saw him beach his car in the gravel on the way into the pit lane, and a poor start in Brazil compounded his troubles. Raikkonen, written off by many earlier in the year, won the final two races to snatch the title. At Interlagos, the Finn took victory to finish on 110 points, exactly one point ahead of both McLaren drivers, who tied on 109.
Raikkonen's championship gave Ferrari a fairy-tale conclusion to a turbulent season and made him the last Ferrari driver to win a drivers' title for many years. The McLaren civil war ultimately cost both Hamilton and Alonso the championship, and Alonso departed the team at season's end to return to Renault. The year also marked the start of the Bridgestone single-supplier era after Michelin's exit. For all the scandal, 2007 announced Hamilton as a generational talent and set the stage for the rivalries that would define the next decade.
