Nick Heidfeld

Nick Heidfeld, born on 10 May 1977 in Monchengladbach, Germany, was one of Formula 1's most consistent midfield drivers across more than a decade in the sport. Nicknamed "Quick Nick," he arrived in F1 with Prost in 2000 after a strong junior career, and went on to make 184 starts for a string of teams over the following eleven years.

Heidfeld spent his most successful years with Sauber and its BMW-backed evolution, driving for Sauber from 2001 to 2003, returning in 2010, and racing for BMW Sauber from 2006 to 2009. His best campaign came in 2007, when he finished fifth in the championship and took a series of podiums as BMW Sauber emerged as the third force behind Ferrari and McLaren. He also drove for Williams in 2005 and Renault in 2011. Although he never won a grand prix, he accumulated 13 podiums, a pole position, 2 fastest laps and 259 points, and holds the unusual distinction of the most podium finishes without a victory.

After his Formula 1 career ended, Heidfeld moved into endurance and electric racing, competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship and finishing on the podium at the Le Mans 24 Hours. He was also one of the founding drivers of the Formula E electric series in its inaugural 2014-15 season, helping launch a new era of motorsport.

Heidfeld was a measured, technically astute driver prized for his consistency, reliability and ability to extract the maximum from a car without errors. Rarely the fastest over a single lap but exceptionally dependable over a race distance, he was the kind of driver teams trusted to bring the car home in the points. His legacy is that of one of the most accomplished grand prix drivers never to take a win, and a pioneer who helped launch both modern endurance and electric racing.
