Ian Burgess

Ian Burgess, a British driver born in 1930, competed in the World Championship from 1958 to 1963, making 24 Grand Prix starts across six consecutive seasons without scoring a point.

He began with Cooper in 1958 and spent the following two years in Cooper-Maserati machinery, before moving through Lotus-Climax in 1961 and back to Cooper-Climax in 1962. His final season, 1963, was spent with the small Scirocco team.

His career illustrates the world of the independent and small-team runner in the late 1950s and early 1960s: five different car-and-engine combinations in six years, regular appearances on the grid, but machinery that rarely offered a route to the top six finishes that carried points.

Burgess retired from championship racing after 1963 with one of the longer point-less careers of the period — 24 starts spread across an era of rapid technical change in Grand Prix racing.
