The 1961 Season

American Phil Hill became the first United States-born Formula One world champion, driving the beautiful 'Sharknose' Ferrari 156 that dominated the new 1.5-litre formula. Ferrari's power advantage made its drivers the class of the field, and the title was settled at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

That race brought tragedy when Hill's team-mate and title rival Wolfgang von Trips crashed, killing himself and fifteen spectators in one of F1's darkest accidents. Hill won the race and the championship, and Ferrari took the Constructors' title in a season forever overshadowed by the Monza disaster.
