Maurício Gugelmin

Maurício Gugelmin, a Brazilian driver born in 1963, competed in Formula 1 from 1988 to 1992, starting seventy-five Grands Prix across five seasons.

He began his career with March in 1988, and his rookie campaign proved his most productive: five points and a podium finish, good for thirteenth in the World Championship. He remained with the team as it became Leyton House, adding four points in 1989 and a single point in 1990, though his championship position slipped each year.

The 1991 season with Leyton House brought no points, and a final year with Jordan in 1992 was similarly barren. Gugelmin retired from Formula 1 with ten points and one podium from his seventy-five starts.

His career pattern is a familiar one for drivers of midfield and back-of-the-grid teams of the era: an early peak followed by diminishing returns as the equipment around him became less competitive.
