Leyton House

Leyton House was the identity under which the March team raced at the turn of the 1990s, after the Japanese property company and its colourful backer Akira Akagi took over as sponsor and then owner. The pale turquoise cars became one of the most distinctive sights on the grid.

The team's cars, penned by a young Adrian Newey, were aerodynamically advanced and capable of brilliance on their day. The defining moment came at the 1990 French Grand Prix, where Ivan Capelli led much of the race and finished a superb second, the Leyton House car briefly the fastest on the track.

Inconsistency, financial scandal involving its backer, and the loss of key personnel undid the team, which reverted to the March name before fading from the grid.

Leyton House is remembered for its beautiful turquoise cars, the early genius of Adrian Newey and a tantalising near-victory in France. A team of flashes of brilliance undermined by instability, it remains a vivid and somewhat romantic memory of early-1990s Formula 1.
