About Alessandro Zanardi

Alessandro Zanardi, an Italian driver born in 1966, made 42 World Championship starts in a Formula 1 career that came in two distinct chapters. The first ran from 1991 to 1994: a debut with Jordan at 24, a season with Minardi in 1992, and two years with Team Lotus in 1993 and 1994.

His sole championship point came in the 1993 Lotus campaign, which classified him twentieth in the World Championship. Under the top-six scoring system of the day, even a single point from midfield machinery was hard-won, and it remained the only score of his Grand Prix career.

After 1994 he left Formula 1 for four seasons, returning in 1999 with Williams for a full campaign that, despite the stature of the team, produced no points and no classified championship position. That year proved to be his last in the championship.

Zanardi's Formula 1 record closed at one point from 42 starts across five seasons and four teams, its shape defined by the long gap at its centre and the contrasting fortunes either side of it.
