Hunt vs Lauda
Fire, Rain, and Courage
The Story
The 1976 season is the most famous championship battle in Formula 1 history, immortalised in the film Rush. Niki Lauda led the championship comfortably before his near-fatal crash at the Nurburgring, where his Ferrari burst into flames and he inhaled toxic fumes that burned his lungs. Lauda was given the last rites in hospital, yet returned to racing just 42 days later at Monza, his head still bleeding beneath his bandages, finishing fourth. The championship swung back and forth as James Hunt, the charismatic British playboy, mounted a furious charge in his McLaren. At the rain-soaked finale in Fuji, Japan, Lauda withdrew after two laps, deciding his life was worth more than a championship. Hunt drove on through the monsoon, finishing third to take the title by a single point. It remains the ultimate story of courage, rivalry, and the price of glory.
