Jochen Mass

Jochen Mass, a German driver, competed in Formula 1 from 1973 to 1982, making 107 starts, winning one Grand Prix and standing on the podium eight times.

He entered the championship with Surtees, spending two pointless seasons there before a move to McLaren transformed his career. His three years with the team, from 1975 to 1977, brought all the high points: his sole victory came in 1975, part of a 20-point season, and he followed it with 19 points in 1976 and a career-best 25 points and sixth in the World Championship in 1977.

Leaving McLaren proved a step down the grid. A season with ATS in 1978 yielded nothing, and two years at Arrows in 1979 and 1980 produced only modest returns of three and four points. After sitting out 1981 entirely, he returned for a final campaign with March in 1982, which brought no further points.

Mass's decade in Formula 1 divides neatly in two: five front-running seasons crowned by a win and repeated podiums, and five spent labouring in uncompetitive cars. His final tally of 71 points and eight podiums from 107 starts was earned almost entirely in the McLaren years at the heart of his career.
