The 1976 Season

The 1976 season delivered one of the greatest rivalries in F1 history, between Ferrari's Niki Lauda and McLaren's James Hunt. Lauda dominated early before a horrific fiery crash at the Nurburgring left him with severe burns and near-fatal injuries; astonishingly, he returned to racing just six weeks later.

Hunt chipped away at Lauda's lead through the second half of the year. At the rain-soaked, fog-bound Japanese finale at Fuji, Lauda withdrew on safety grounds while Hunt fought to third place, clinching the championship by a single point in a dramatic, controversy-filled climax.
