John Watson

John Watson was a British racing driver from Northern Ireland who competed in Formula 1 from 1973 to 1985, a thoughtful and stylish competitor best known for his time with McLaren and for a series of remarkable comeback drives. Quietly determined and technically astute, he was one of the leading British drivers of his era and a respected presence on the grid throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Watson scored his first Grand Prix win with Penske at the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, the only championship victory for that team, before moving to Brabham and then to McLaren, where he enjoyed his greatest success. He took 5 career wins, 20 podium finishes, 2 pole positions and 169 points across 152 starts, and finished third in the 1982 World Championship in a close-fought campaign. His most famous victory came at the 1983 United States Grand Prix West in Long Beach, where he charged through the field to win after starting from 22nd on the grid, one of the greatest recovery drives the sport has seen.

After his Formula 1 career wound down in the mid-1980s, Watson moved into sports car racing and later became a widely respected television commentator and analyst, drawing on his deep understanding of the sport.

Watson was a smooth and intelligent racer, gifted at conserving his car and tyres and capable of producing stunning charges from the back of the field when the situation demanded. His Long Beach victory from 22nd remains a touchstone for great comeback drives in Formula 1 history. Articulate and analytical, he became one of the sport's most insightful commentators after retiring, and is remembered as a classy and underrated driver whose results often flattered the machinery beneath him.
