About Miami International Autodrome

The Miami International Autodrome is a temporary circuit laid out around the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, Florida, home of the Miami Dolphins. Joining the calendar in 2022, it became the second Grand Prix in the United States after Austin, part of Formula 1's rapid growth in America driven by the success of the Netflix series "Drive to Survive."

The event leaned heavily into spectacle and glamour, marketing itself as a star-studded festival as much as a motor race. One early talking point was a fake marina built in the infield, complete with mock yachts on painted "water" — a piece of staging that drew both amusement and mockery, and which was quietly toned down in later years as the focus shifted toward the racing itself.

On track, Miami has been a happy hunting ground for Red Bull and Max Verstappen, who has dominated several of its editions. The circuit has steadily matured into an established fixture, reflecting Formula 1's deepening commercial roots in the United States.

Memorable Moments

  • 2022: Max Verstappen won the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for Red Bull, chasing down and passing the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to take victory in the event's debut.
  • 2023: Verstappen carved through the field from ninth on the grid to win again, overhauling polesitter and team-mate Sergio Pérez in a commanding drive.
  • 2024: Lando Norris scored his maiden Formula 1 victory, capitalising on a well-timed safety car for McLaren to break through after years of near-misses.
  • 2025: McLaren showed strong pace as the team's resurgence continued, with Oscar Piastri and Norris to the fore in the early phase of the season.

Track Character

The Miami layout mixes long, flat-out straights — where DRS and slipstreaming create real overtaking chances into the heavy braking zones — with a tight, awkward, low-grip technical section that snakes beneath a highway overpass and frustrates rhythm. The surface was slippery and treacherous in its early years, catching out several drivers, and the circuit rewards strong straight-line speed and traction out of its slow corners. The blend of high-speed and stop-start sections, combined with Florida's heat, makes it a varied challenge wrapped in one of the sport's most overtly glamorous settings.
