About Ivan Capelli

Ivan Capelli was an Italian driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1985 and 1993, accumulating 95 starts across nine seasons. He made his debut with Tyrrell in 1985 at the age of 22 and scored three points immediately, placing eighteenth in that year's championship.

After a pointless 1986 with the small AGS operation, Capelli joined March, where he spent three seasons. The 1988 campaign was the high point of his career: he collected seventeen points and finished seventh in the drivers' championship, comfortably his best classification.

When March's Formula 1 effort continued under the Leyton House name, Capelli stayed on for 1990 and 1991, taking six points and tenth place in the standings in the first of those years before a leaner follow-up season. His form earned him a move to Ferrari for 1992, but the partnership yielded only three points and thirteenth in the championship, and he was replaced before switching to Jordan for a brief, pointless 1993 that closed his career.

Capelli never won a Grand Prix, but his three podium finishes and 31 career points marked him out as a driver capable of strong results when his machinery allowed, particularly during his March years.
