Philippe Étancelin

Philippe Étancelin was already in his mid-fifties when the Formula 1 World Championship held its first season in 1950. Born in 1896, the Frenchman contested twelve World Championship Grands Prix across three consecutive seasons between 1950 and 1952, making him one of the elder statesmen on the grids of the championship's earliest years.

His opening campaign proved to be his most productive. Driving a Talbot-Lago in 1950, Étancelin collected three championship points and was classified eighteenth in the drivers' standings — the only points he would score at World Championship level.

He remained with Talbot-Lago for 1951 but went unclassified in the championship, and for his final season in 1952 he switched to Maserati machinery, again without adding to his points tally.

Étancelin's championship record closes at twelve starts and three points, with no wins, podiums or pole positions. It was a brief top-level chapter that came remarkably late in life: his World Championship debut arrived at the age of fifty-three, and his final start came shortly before his fifty-sixth birthday.
