The 1951 Season
Juan Manuel Fangio claimed the first of his five world titles, again with Alfa Romeo, narrowly seeing off the fast-rising Ferrari challenge. The season is remembered for Ferrari finally breaking Alfa Romeo's stranglehold, with Jose Froilan Gonzalez taking the marque's maiden championship victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Fangio sealed the title at the season finale in Spain, where tyre choices doomed Ferrari's Alberto Ascari. It would be Alfa Romeo's last championship before the famous team withdrew from Grand Prix racing at season's end.
