Alessandro Nannini

Alessandro Nannini was an Italian driver, born on 7 July 1959 in Siena, whose Formula 1 career mixed flair, popularity and ultimately heartbreak. The son of a famous Italian confectionery family, he reached F1 with Minardi in 1986 and gradually built a reputation as a fast, committed racer before joining Benetton, where his career took off.

His defining moment came at the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. After the controversial collision between title rivals Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, and Senna's subsequent disqualification, Nannini was awarded the victory, his only grand prix win. Across 77 starts he scored 1 win, 9 podiums and 65 points, all of it suggesting a driver on a steep upward trajectory. Tragically, his F1 career was cut short when he was severely injured in a helicopter crash in October 1990 that resulted in the temporary loss of his right forearm, which was surgically reattached.

Nannini never returned to Formula 1, but he made a remarkable recovery and went on to compete successfully in touring cars during the 1990s. He is remembered as a hugely popular and talented driver whose grand prix story was halted just as he was reaching his peak.

Nannini was an aggressive, spirited racer with abundant natural pace and a popularity that extended well beyond his home country. His sudden departure from Formula 1 after the 1990 helicopter crash robbed the sport of a driver many believed was destined for greater things, and his courageous comeback in touring cars only deepened the admiration for him.
