Alain Prost won back-to-back titles in 1986 in a thrilling three-way finale between himself and Williams pair Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet. At the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, Mansell needed only third place but suffered a dramatic high-speed rear tyre blowout, ending his title hopes.
Williams brought Piquet in for a precautionary stop, and Prost capitalized to win the race and snatch the championship. Williams took the constructors' crown, but Prost's opportunism made him the first back-to-back champion since Jack Brabham.
