The Record Book — Single Season
F1 Season Records
The greatest single campaigns in Formula 1. Max Verstappen's 2023 season reset almost every benchmark on this page — 19 wins, 575 points, over 1,000 laps led — but the historic marks of Vettel, Schumacher, Senna and Ascari still hold their ground. Here are the best single-season feats in the sport's history.
Most Wins in a Season
For two decades, 13 wins — shared by Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013) — was the ceiling. Then Max Verstappen won 19 of 22 races in 2023, a tally inflated by ever-longer calendars but unmatched in raw count. Click any heading to re-sort.
| # | Driver | Wins | Year | Races |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Max Verstappen | 19 | 2023 | 22 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | 15 | 2022 | 22 |
| 3 | Michael Schumacher | 13 | 2004 | 18 |
| 4 | Sebastian Vettel | 13 | 2013 | 19 |
| 5 | Michael Schumacher | 11 | 2002 | 17 |
| 6 | Sebastian Vettel | 11 | 2011 | 19 |
| 7 | Lewis Hamilton | 11 | 2018 | 21 |
| 8 | Lewis Hamilton | 11 | 2019 | 21 |
| 9 | Lewis Hamilton | 11 | 2014 | 19 |
| 10 | Nigel Mansell | 9 | 1992 | 16 |
Hamilton also won 11 races in 2020 (from just 17 starts) and 10 each in 2015 and 2016. Mansell's nine wins in 1992 came from a 16-race calendar.
Most Poles & Most Points
Sebastian Vettel's 15 poles in 2011 still tops the qualifying list, just ahead of Nigel Mansell's 14 in his title-winning 1992 Williams. Points totals, by contrast, only make sense within the modern 25-for-a-win era — every entry in the top five comes from 2013 or later.
| Driver | Poles | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Sebastian Vettel | 15 | 2011 |
| Nigel Mansell | 14 | 1992 |
| Ayrton Senna | 13 | 1988 |
| Ayrton Senna | 13 | 1989 |
| Alain Prost | 13 | 1993 |
| Max Verstappen | 12 | 2023 |
| Driver | Points | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Max Verstappen | 575 | 2023 |
| Max Verstappen | 454 | 2022 |
| Lewis Hamilton | 413 | 2019 |
| Lewis Hamilton | 408 | 2018 |
| Sebastian Vettel | 397 | 2013 |
Raw points totals are not comparable across eras — a win was worth 9 points before 2010 and 25 after. This list covers the modern points system only.
Highest Win Percentage in a Season
Win percentage levels the playing field between short and long calendars. Verstappen's 19-from-22 (86.4%) in 2023 is the highest ever, but the 1950s aces ran the closest: Ascari and Fangio each won three-quarters of the races they entered.
| # | Driver | Win % | Wins/Races | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Max Verstappen | 86.4% | 19/22 | 2023 |
| 2 | Alberto Ascari | 75.0% | 6/8 | 1952 |
| 3 | Juan Manuel Fangio | 75.0% | 6/8 | 1954 |
| 4 | Michael Schumacher | 72.2% | 13/18 | 2004 |
| 5 | Jim Clark | 70.0% | 7/10 | 1963 |
| 6 | Max Verstappen | 68.2% | 15/22 | 2022 |
| 7 | Michael Schumacher | 64.7% | 11/17 | 2002 |
1950s percentages use the championship races each driver actually contested (the Indianapolis 500, then a championship round, is excluded as F1 regulars did not enter it). Ordering of the 64–68% cluster varies slightly by source.
Podiums, Laps Led & Constructor Records
Verstappen's 2023 also brought 21 podiums and a barrier-breaking 1,003 laps led — the first four-figure total in history. For teams, Red Bull's 21 wins in 2023 is the most ever, while McLaren's 1988 remains the highest win rate by a constructor.
Most Podiums in a Season
Schumacher finished on the podium in every race in 2002 — the only driver ever to do so across a full season.
Most Laps Led / Fastest Laps
Verstappen was the first driver ever to lead more than 1,000 laps in a season. The single-season fastest-lap record is 10, shared three ways.
Most Constructor Wins
Red Bull's 2023 win rate (95.5%) is the highest ever; McLaren 1988 (93.8%) is the benchmark from the turbo era. Mercedes' 12 one-two finishes in 2015 is also a record.
