Nigel Mansell

Nigel Mansell was the swashbuckling 1992 Formula 1 World Champion whose all-action style and unbreakable determination made him one of the most popular drivers Britain has ever produced. Across 190 starts the Englishman recorded 31 wins, 32 pole positions and 59 podiums, fighting his way to the top through sheer persistence after years of near-misses and setbacks.

Mansell broke through with Williams in the mid-1980s, finishing championship runner-up in 1986 and 1987 amid intense battles, before two seasons at Ferrari where he became a fan favourite as "Il Leone", the Lion. Returning to Williams, he produced a record-breaking 1992 campaign, winning nine races and taking the title in commanding fashion. He then walked away from F1 to win the 1993 IndyCar championship as a rookie in the United States, an unprecedented feat. His thrilling wheel-to-wheel duels, including his famous pass on Gerhard Berger at the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix and his battles with Senna and Piquet, defined an era.

Beloved for his bravery and his never-say-die attitude, Mansell remains the only man to hold the Formula 1 and IndyCar titles simultaneously, a measure of the sheer competitive force he brought to every car he drove.
