Derek Daly

Derek Daly, an Irish driver born in 1953, raced in Formula 1 from 1978 to 1982, accumulating forty-nine Grand Prix starts and fifteen World Championship points across five seasons. He made his debut at the age of twenty-five with Hesketh in 1978, and scored a point in his very first season, enough to be classified twentieth in that year's championship.

Daly's career was marked by frequent changes of team. After Hesketh he moved to Ensign for 1979, a pointless campaign, before joining Tyrrell in 1980. That season proved his most productive: six points and twelfth place in the drivers' standings, the best championship position of his career.

A switch to March for 1981 yielded nothing, but Daly bounced back in 1982, taking eight points — his highest single-season total — and thirteenth in the championship. That final year saw him drive for Theodore, and his list of employers across the five seasons also included Williams, making it a career spent with an unusually wide spread of teams.

Although Daly never took a win, podium or pole position, his fifteen points were earned in an era when only the top six finishers scored, and points finishes in midfield machinery were hard-won results.
