Tyrrell

Tyrrell Racing was the creation of Ken Tyrrell, a timber merchant turned team owner with an exceptional eye for talent. Having guided Jackie Stewart through the junior ranks, Tyrrell entered Formula 1 as a constructor in 1970 and almost immediately reached the top.

With Stewart driving, Tyrrell won the drivers' championship in 1971 and 1973 and the constructors' title in 1971, establishing itself as a leading team of the early 1970s. The team is also remembered for the extraordinary six-wheeled P34 of 1976, which raced with four small front wheels and remains one of the most famous experimental cars in the sport's history.

Tyrrell remained a respected independent for many years but gradually slipped down the order as costs rose. It was sold and became the basis of what would eventually evolve, through several ownership changes, into the team that races today, giving Tyrrell a quiet claim to one of the longest lineages on the grid.

Tyrrell represents the best of the privateer tradition: a small, principled team led by a shrewd judge of talent that beat far larger rivals. Ken Tyrrell's partnership with Jackie Stewart is one of the sport's great alliances, and the six-wheeler ensures the team a permanent place in Formula 1 folklore.
