Ensign

Ensign was a small British team, founded by Morris Nunn, that competed in Formula 1 for a decade from the early 1970s. Operating on a perennially tight budget, it was one of the classic shoestring privateers of its era.

Despite its limited means, Ensign occasionally showed surprising pace and scored points on a number of occasions, running a string of drivers who would go on to better things. Its neat, conventional cars sometimes punched above the team's financial weight, though reliability and resources always constrained it.

Ensign eventually merged with other small teams late in its life before disappearing from the grid in the early 1980s.

Ensign is fondly remembered as one of the gutsy small teams that gave 1970s Formula 1 its character, achieving the occasional eye-catching result against far richer opposition. Its story is that of the dedicated privateer, racing for the love of the sport on next to nothing.
