About Bruno Giacomelli

Bruno Giacomelli, an Italian driver born in 1952, raced in Formula 1 from 1977 to 1983, accumulating sixty-nine starts over seven consecutive seasons with three teams: McLaren, Alfa Romeo and Toleman.

His first two seasons, 1977 and 1978, were spent making appearances for McLaren without scoring. In 1979 he joined Alfa Romeo as the famous Italian marque rebuilt its Grand Prix programme, and it was there that his career took shape over four seasons.

The Alfa Romeo years brought his entire haul of headline results: a pole position, a podium finish, and points in three straight seasons — four in 1980, seven in 1981 (when he achieved his best championship placing of fifteenth), and two in 1982. A final year with Toleman in 1983 added one last point, for nineteenth in the standings.

With fourteen career points from sixty-nine starts, Giacomelli's record understates a driver who could qualify at the sharp end — his pole position attests to that — but who spent his peak years in cars that seldom converted speed into results.
