The 1983 Season
Nelson Piquet won his second drivers' title in 1983, becoming the first champion to win in a turbocharged car as he drove the BMW-powered Brabham to the crown. He overhauled Renault's Alain Prost in a tight finish over the closing rounds.
Ground-effect aerodynamics were banned in favor of flat-bottomed cars, reshaping the technical landscape. Ferrari took the constructors' championship as turbo power firmly established itself as essential to success.
