Heikki Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen, a Finnish driver born in 1981, competed in Formula 1 between 2007 and 2013, accumulating 112 starts, one victory, four podiums, one pole position and 105 championship points across seven seasons.

He arrived in the championship with Renault in 2007, scoring 30 points and finishing seventh in the standings as a rookie. A move to McLaren followed for 2008, and it proved the high point of his career: he took his only Grand Prix win that year on his way to 53 points and another seventh-place championship finish. A second McLaren season in 2009 yielded 22 points and twelfth overall.

From 2010 his career took a very different shape. He joined the new Lotus operation, staying for 2011, then continued with the team as it became Caterham in 2012 before a final appearance under the Lotus F1 banner in 2013. Across those four seasons he failed to score, a reflection of machinery that ran towards the back of the field rather than of the form he had shown in front-running cars.

Kovalainen's career thus divides neatly in two: three seasons as a points-scoring works driver, then four spent developing a fledgling team. His two fastest laps and a win rate of just under one percent round out the statistical record.
