Caterham

Caterham was the final identity of the team that began in 2010 as Lotus Racing, taking the name of the British sports-car maker that Tony Fernandes's group had acquired. From 2012 the green cars carried the Caterham badge as the team continued to fight at the rear of the grid.

Despite three seasons of effort and considerable investment, Caterham was never able to break out of the back of the field or score a championship point, struggling like many small new teams against the entrenched advantages of the established constructors.

Financial collapse brought the team down at the end of 2014, after a crowdfunding campaign allowed it to make a final appearance, ending the story of the 2010 newcomer.

Caterham's struggle illustrates how brutally difficult it is for a new team to break into Formula 1 against established rivals. Though it never scored a point, its perseverance against the odds, and its dramatic crowdfunded final race, made it a sympathetic figure in the sport's modern history.
