About Tony Maggs

Tony Maggs, a South African driver born in 1937, competed in the Formula 1 World Championship from 1961 to 1965, making 27 starts and scoring 26 points with three podium finishes.

After a pointless debut season with a Lotus-Climax in 1961, Maggs joined Cooper-Climax and immediately delivered his best results. In 1962 he scored 13 points and finished seventh in the World Championship, and he followed that with nine points and eighth place in 1963 — two consecutive top-ten championship placings.

A move to BRM for 1964 brought a further four points and thirteenth in the standings, before a final, pointless season with a Lotus-BRM in 1965 closed his Formula 1 career at the age of 28.

Maggs never took a win or a pole, but his three podiums and near one-point-per-start ratio during the Cooper years mark him out as a consistently competitive presence in the front half of the early-1960s field.
