About Tom Pryce

Tom Pryce, a British driver born in 1949, competed in Formula 1 from 1974 to 1977, making 42 starts. He debuted at 25 with the tiny Token operation, scoring a point in his first season to be classified nineteenth, before joining Shadow, the team with which the rest of his career would be spent.

The 1975 season established him as a genuine points contender: eight points with Shadow-Ford and tenth place in the drivers' championship, the best final position of his career. He also took a pole position and two podium finishes during his time in Formula 1, results that spoke to real speed in machinery that seldom threatened the championship's front-runners.

In 1976 he added ten points — his highest single-season total — and was classified twelfth. The 1977 season, again with Shadow, brought no points before his career record closed.

Across four seasons Pryce accumulated 19 points, one pole and two podiums, almost all of it achieved with a midfield team. His trajectory from a one-car backmarker entry to regular top-ten championship contention marked him out among the British drivers of the mid-1970s.
