Shadow

Shadow was an Anglo-American team, founded by Don Nichols, that brought a distinctive black livery and a touch of mystery to Formula 1 in the 1970s. Initially backed by the UOP oil additive company, the team raced through much of the decade.

Shadow's high point was a victory in the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix, taken by Alan Jones in a rain-affected race, an unexpected win for the privateer outfit. The team also gave opportunities to numerous drivers and engineers, and a breakaway from Shadow led to the formation of the Arrows team.

Shadow gradually slipped down the order and left the grid at the end of the 1970s, but its brief flash of glory and striking image left a lasting impression.

Shadow is remembered for its enigmatic image and its giant-killing win in Austria. A true privateer with a flair for the dramatic, it represents the colourful, varied character of 1970s Formula 1, when a small team could still spring a surprise on the giants.
