George Russell

George Russell is a British racing driver and a lead driver for the Mercedes works team. Born in King's Lynn in 1998, he was a dominant junior, winning the GP3 title in 2017 and the Formula 2 championship in 2018, both at the first attempt. A Mercedes junior, he made his F1 debut with Williams in 2019, spending three seasons extracting strong results from an uncompetitive car and earning a reputation as a qualifying specialist.

Russell's standout one-off drive deputising for Mercedes in 2020, where he came close to winning, confirmed his potential, and he was promoted to the works team for 2022. He took his maiden victory that year in Brazil and has steadily added to his win tally since, establishing himself as a reliable front-running presence and the team's points anchor through the latter part of the hybrid era.

In 2026 Russell continues to lead the Mercedes line-up, partnered by rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli. After fourteen rounds he sits second in the championship on 211 points, having won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix from pole, and added the fastest lap in the first Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid. The late summer brought a purple patch: victory in the Zandvoort sprint, third in the Dutch Grand Prix and second at Monza in a Mercedes 1-2, results that lifted him back ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the standings.

Russell is a cerebral, technically astute driver with excellent qualifying pace and a smooth, calculated racing style. Articulate and influential off track as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, he has matured into a leader within his team. With a string of wins and a settled role at Mercedes, he is firmly established as a future championship hope.
