The 2020 Season
The 2020 Formula 1 season was shaped entirely by the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the start until July and forced a hastily redrawn 17-race calendar built largely around European venues, with some circuits hosting two events under new names such as the Eifel, Tuscan and Sakhir Grands Prix. Behind closed doors and under strict bio-bubble protocols, Mercedes simply continued where they had left off, fielding a car so dominant that the title fight was effectively over by autumn. Lewis Hamilton was imperious throughout, racking up win after win and clinching his seventh World Championship at the Turkish Grand Prix with a masterful drive from sixth on the grid in treacherous wet conditions, equalling Michael Schumacher's all-time record.
Mercedes wrapped up a seventh consecutive Constructors' Championship with ease, but the season still delivered unforgettable drama. The most harrowing moment came at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where Romain Grosjean's Haas speared through the barriers and split in two, erupting into a fireball; the Frenchman escaped after nearly half a minute in the flames, his survival a vivid testament to the halo device and modern safety standards. The incident overshadowed the racing but became one of the sport's most powerful safety stories.
With Hamilton sidelined by a positive COVID-19 test for the Sakhir Grand Prix, the season produced one of its most tantalising what-ifs. Reserve driver George Russell, called up from Williams, looked set to win on debut for Mercedes, leading comfortably until a botched pit stop and a late puncture cruelly denied him; Sergio Perez inherited the lead to score a maiden victory for Racing Point. Russell's performance announced him as a future star and added intrigue to the Mercedes driver market.
Beyond the front, the midfield was tight and unpredictable, with Racing Point's so-called pink Mercedes, McLaren's resurgence and a competitive Renault all scrapping for podiums. Pierre Gasly delivered a stunning upset win for AlphaTauri at Monza after a red-flag-shaped race, and Daniel Ricciardo, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz all reached the rostrum. The season cemented Hamilton's status among the greats while quietly setting the stage for the seismic championship battle that 2021 would bring.
