About Circuit of the Americas

The Circuit of the Americas, on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, is a purpose-built Grand Prix venue designed by Hermann Tilke and opened in 2012. It returned the United States Grand Prix to the calendar after a gap, and quickly established itself as the country's premier F1 venue and a major draw for fans across the Americas.

The track borrows inspiration from some of the world's great corners, blending fast, flowing esses with tight technical sections. Lewis Hamilton dominated its early years, taking multiple wins on his way to several championships, while Sebastian Vettel triumphed in 2013. More recently Max Verstappen has been the man to beat, racking up several victories as the circuit became a regular stop on the expanded calendar.

Memorable Moments

  • 2012: In the venue's first F1 race, Lewis Hamilton hunted down and passed Sebastian Vettel to win, denting Red Bull's title march in a thrilling debut event.
  • 2015: Hamilton won a rain-hit, chaotic race to clinch his third world championship, capitalising on a late mistake by team-mate Nico Rosberg.
  • 2018: Kimi Raikkonen ended a long victory drought with a superbly judged drive for Ferrari, his first win in more than five years.
  • 2021: Max Verstappen held off Hamilton in a tense strategic duel, a pivotal win in their fiercely contested championship battle.

Track Character

The circuit's signature feature is the steep uphill climb to the blind, off-camber Turn 1, a hard left-hander that rewards bravery on the brakes and routinely produces first-lap drama. From there the lap flows through a fast, Silverstone-inspired sequence of esses before a long back straight that, combined with DRS, makes for prime overtaking into the following hairpin. The mix of high-speed direction changes and heavy braking zones is demanding on both car and driver, and a notoriously bumpy surface adds to the challenge. The vast, festival-like crowds give Austin a big-event atmosphere that few venues can match.
