2017 Formula 1 Season

The 2017 season brought sweeping new regulations designed to make the cars dramatically faster and more spectacular, with wider bodywork, larger tyres and far greater aerodynamic downforce producing the quickest Formula One cars in history at the time. The changes also, crucially, allowed Ferrari to mount its most serious title challenge of the hybrid era. With Nico Rosberg retired, Lewis Hamilton's primary rival became Sebastian Vettel, and the two four-time and three-time champions engaged in a compelling cross-team duel that revived a genuine championship fight.

Vettel and Ferrari started strongly, with the German taking the early championship lead and the Scuderia looking, for the first time in years, capable of beating Mercedes on merit. The fight was intense and at times ill-tempered, reaching a notorious flashpoint at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, where Vettel, believing Hamilton had brake-tested him behind the safety car, pulled alongside and deliberately drove into the Mercedes in a road-rage moment that earned him widespread criticism and a penalty.

The decisive swing came in the autumn. Vettel's title bid unravelled through a combination of mechanical failures and self-inflicted errors, most damagingly a first-corner collision at his home Singapore Grand Prix that wiped out both Ferraris and his team-mate. A string of Ferrari reliability problems and Hamilton's relentless consistency turned a close fight into a comfortable margin. Hamilton clinched his fourth world championship at the Mexican Grand Prix, drawing level with Vettel and Alain Prost on four titles.

Mercedes again secured the Constructors' Championship, but the season was significant for restoring genuine competition at the front and for the spectacle of the faster new-generation cars. Hamilton's fourth title cemented his place among the all-time greats, while Ferrari's collapse from a strong position foreshadowed a recurring theme. The year also saw the continued rise of Max Verstappen and the emergence of new talent, setting the stage for the rivalries that would shape the sport in the years to come.
