Larrousse

Larrousse was a French team founded by former racing driver Gérard Larrousse, competing in Formula 1 from the late 1980s into the 1990s. It operated as a privateer in the increasingly expensive midfield of that era.

The team's standout achievement came at the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix, where Aguri Suzuki finished third to become the first Japanese driver to stand on a Formula 1 podium, a hugely significant moment achieved in a Larrousse car. The team scored points on a number of other occasions with drivers such as Éric Bernard.

Chronic financial difficulties, common to independents of the period, eventually overwhelmed the team, which folded in the mid-1990s.

Larrousse is remembered for giving Japan its first Formula 1 podium and for the dogged spirit of a French privateer battling the rising costs of the sport. A characteristic underdog of its era, it left a meaningful mark despite limited resources.
