Super Aguri

Super Aguri was a small Japanese team founded by former Formula 1 driver Aguri Suzuki, entering the sport in 2006 partly to give Honda protege Takuma Sato a continued drive after he lost his works seat. Closely linked to Honda, it raced on a famously tight budget.

Despite its limited resources and cars initially based on older Honda designs, Super Aguri produced one of the great underdog moments of the era when Sato scored points and memorably overtook the works Honda of Jenson Button on his way to sixth place at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix.

Financial backing collapsed early in 2008, and the team withdrew after just a few races, ending a short but fondly remembered campaign.

Super Aguri captured hearts as a tiny team that occasionally embarrassed far bigger rivals, never more so than when Sato passed the works Honda in Canada. Its brief existence is remembered warmly as one of the sport's plucky, against-the-odds stories.
