About Horace Gould

Horace Gould, a British driver born in 1918, made seventeen World Championship starts across six seasons between 1954 and 1960, a career pursued almost entirely as a privateer. He began with a Cooper in 1954 before switching to Maserati machinery, which he campaigned for the rest of his time in Grand Prix racing.

The 1956 season was the high-water mark: two championship points earned him twenty-first place in the standings, his only classified finish in the championship and his only points. In an era when just the leading finishers scored, even that modest haul was a real achievement for an owner-driver.

He continued entering his Maserati in 1957 and 1958 without further reward, and after missing 1959 made a final appearance in 1960, closing a seven-year span of intermittent racing.

Gould's seventeen starts with elderly customer equipment against the factory teams of the 1950s typify the private entrants who kept Grand Prix grids full — persistent, self-financed, and rewarded only rarely.
