The 1954 Season
A new 2.5-litre formula arrived, and Juan Manuel Fangio won his second world title spanning two teams in one year. He started the season winning with Maserati before switching mid-campaign to the returning Mercedes-Benz, whose streamlined W196 announced the German marque's powerful comeback at the French Grand Prix.
Fangio's dominance with Mercedes proved decisive, and the silver cars signalled a new technical era. Ferrari's Jose Froilan Gonzalez and Mike Hawthorn provided the main opposition, but could not match Fangio's consistency.
