About Gene Hartley

Gene Hartley, an American driver born in 1926, made nine World Championship starts between 1950 and 1960, all at the Indianapolis 500, which counted toward the Formula 1 World Championship during those years.

His appearances came in a variety of American oval-racing chassis: a Langley in 1950, Kurtis Krafts through the early and mid-1950s, a Lesovsky in 1957, and Kuzmas in 1956 and 1959 before a final Kurtis Kraft start in 1960.

Across his eight seasons of participation Hartley never scored championship points, but his decade-long run of starts reflects a sustained career in American championship racing during the period when its greatest race formed part of the Formula 1 calendar.
