The 1953 Season
Alberto Ascari retained his title in another season run to Formula Two rules, again driving the superb Ferrari 500 to a second consecutive championship. He won five of the nine rounds, fending off the resurgent Maserati of Fangio and team-mate Luigi Villoresi.
The season climaxed at a dramatic Italian Grand Prix, where Ascari, Fangio and Marimon battled wheel-to-wheel until a last-lap crash handed Fangio the win. Ascari's back-to-back crowns made him the first repeat champion in F1 history.
